SIHANOUKVILLE

Sihanoukville

Sihanoukville is Cambodia's premier beach town, sporting miles of white sand beaches, some excellent seafood, a heady party scene, and several nearby tropical islands. The town sits on a peninsula jutting into the warm waters of the Gulf of Thailand. Beaches of fine pearl-white sand line the shore around the peninsula, each offering its own unique character, from the busy and popular Ochheuteal Beach to the secluded chill-out far end of Otres Beach.

The main beaches are lined with thatch roofed seafood shacks and bars offering cold drinks, umbrellas and chairs, BBQ and more. Sihanoukville is also a town that knows how to party and there’s no shortage of nightspots and beach parties late into the night. Sihanoukville is a place to unwind by the beach, enjoy the fresh seafood, party at the bars and happenings, go boating or scuba diving or use as a jumping off point to the islands.

Accomodation

Sihanoukville town sits in the center of a small peninsula that juts into the Gulf of Thailand. surrounded on three sides by beaches with the downtown area near the center of the peninsula. It is currently the low season in Sihanoukville (May-October) and many of the hotels are offering excellent low season deals. Shop around for the best price. Guesthouses in Sihanoukville rack at around $3-$20, mid-range places run $35-$85, and the few upscale resorts are generally $120+. Most accommodations are concentrated into four areas: downtown, the Ochheuteal Beach area, Otres Beach the Victory Hill. Ochheuteal is the most popular beach and has a range of places. Otres is further from town and a bit more secluded with rustic bungalows, several guesthouses and a few upmarket places.

In Sihanoukville you'll find some of Cambodia's best local food, with the focus firmly on fresh from the ocean seafood. Seafood shacks line Ochheuteal, Otres and Independence Beaches, where you'll also find excellent value for money at the popular evening seafood BBQs as well as the BBQ restaurants along 23 Tola Street.

The foreign fare is also very good as many of the foreign restaurants are aimed at expats as much as tourists and hoping for return customers. Some truly provide a touch of home... Small Hotel to name a few.

These days there are literally hundreds of restaurants in Sihanoukville and we can’t list but a fraction here. So in addition to our advertisers we try to list other popular places as well as restaurants where we at Canby Media like to eat.

Note: Some of the beach restaurants are having to relocate a few tens of meters back from the beach. If you find your favorite beach place seems to be missing or closed, it's probably just moved 30 or 40 meters away. Ask around to find the new location.

Sihanoukville is a town that knows how to party, much of it done at the beach bars, especially on Ochheuteal and Otres, especially late night, but there’s plenty off-beach as well. A varied string of places line Serendipity Beach Road, a few cocktail bars and individual little neighborhood pubs dot the downtown, and Victory Hill are packed with dozens of hostess and sports bars. Sihanoukville tippling is still very cheap, many places offering 50 cent draft and $1 cans at happy hour, and some places all day long.

Live music is still a bit thin in Sihanoukville, but getting better. Big Easy have occasional live music as do beach bars like Saturdays at the Otres Village Market when it is running in the high season.

Other Things to Do

blue and white water waves

Sihanoukville town sits in the center of a small peninsula that juts into the warm waters of the Gulf of Thailand.
Several beaches of fine pearl-white sand line the shore around the peninsula, most easily accessible from town, each separated as much by character as the rocky headlands between. The main beaches are lined with thatch roofed seafood shacks and bars offering cold drinks, umbrellas and chairs, BBQ and more. Ochheuteal and Serendipity Beaches are the most popular and the busiest with plenty of nearby hotels, guesthouses, bars and restaurants.

A bit farther from town, Otres and nearby Otres Village continues to grow in popularity, but is still maintaining its laid-back vibe.

On the other side of town, Independence Beach, though small, offers a pleasantly tranquil atmosphere and beachside bbq shacks.

Ochheuteal and Serendipity Beaches

Ochheuteal Beach is by far the most popular and touristed beach in town with ‘Serendipity Beach’ at the arcing northern end and busy Serendipity Beach Road stretching from the beach to the Golden Lion Roundabout. Restaurants that line Ochheuteal typically offering full bars and food, especially seafood BBQ at sunset. Ochheuteal is also the partyingest beach in town with many of the bars open very late night, with cheap drinks, fire dancing and parties into the wee hours.

Accommodations...

The area has a good selection of accommodations ranging from mid-range to budget with most on the roads paralleling the beach and Serendipity Beach Road, and a few places tucked up along the headlands.

Restaurants & Bars...

On the beach, shack-style seafood restaurants and bars tightly line more than a kilometer of the sand's edge from Serendipity to mid-beach. The restaurants typically offer umbrellas and beach chairs, have full bars and most have food, especially BBQ on the beach at sunset when restaurants put seafood and meats on display and offer inexpensive classic BBQ dinners.

Just off the beach, they do the same evening BBQ at along Lumhei Phumin Street (23 Tola) where there are more than a dozen places.

Nightlife...

Many of the beach bars are open into the late night, and of course there is fire dancing, full moon parties and events. Some of the more popular late night places are located at the Serendipity end of the Ochheuteal and along Serendipity Beach Road. Just off the beach the bar plazas Sihanoukville Square and Pub Street have hostess bars, pool, a bit of food and are open late.

Otres Beach

Otres Beach is the next beach south of Ochheuteal. Like Ochheuteal, Otres is a three kilometer crescent of white sand facing southwest, but Otres is further from town and more thinly touristed, offering a more relaxed atmosphere, especially at the far end. Beach shacks and guesthouses line the near (Otres 1) and far (Otres 2) ends with the central section a long, tranquil beach, pleasantly free of rest-aurants, umbrellas and vendors. Behind Otres, the Aquarian back beach enclave of Otres River Village is quickly growing.

Sihanoukville Beaches

The Near End...
At the northern ‘near end’ of the beach (Otres Beach 1) dozens of beachshack bars and restaurants are squeezed together along a kilometer of sand, some staying open quite late and offering events and music. There are also a dozen-plus guesthouses and bungalow places lining the beachfront road just opposite the sand and ocean.

The Far End...
The ‘far end’ of Otres Beach has a more secluded atmosphere than the near but still offers beach bars and restaurants as well as accommodations along the beach road including a few of upper mid-range places and fine dining on the beach.

Otres River Village...
A backbeach enclave with an eco-friendly ambiance behind central Otres Beach with an eclectic mix of people, accommodations and drinking places in an laid back environment. Set amongst mangroves along a small lake and estuary.

Independence Beach (Brampul-Chann Beach)
Independence Beach is the quieter, more relaxed near-town beach. The beach draws its name from the historic Independence Hotel that sits atop the headland at the north end, called ‘otel pram-pul chann (‘hotel 7-storeys’) by the locals.

Independence is better than a kilometer long, but more than half had been closed for several years for a development project. A few months ago most of the beach was reopened to the public, but unlike Ochheuteal and Otres Beaches, Independence is not lined with restaurants and vendors. Currently, about a dozen beach front BBQ huts, restaurants and bars are clustered together on a lightly touristed 500 meter strip of sandy beach at the north end. It’s a nice family beach and a good near-town beach to escape the crowds of Ochheuteal.

The fresh water lake at the north end of the beach serves as the source and reservoir of Sihanoukville's water supply. On the curving road past the northern end of the beach, behind the Independence Hotel, monkeys (macaques) often congregate along the road and beg for food, especially in the late afternoon.

Victory Beach

Victory Beach sits at the base of the popular Victory Hill. Victory Beach offers one of the best sunset views in town but unfortunately the beach is partially closed and there are no longer any bbq shacks or other vendors. Farther north along Victory the beach narrows and a few upscale seafood restaurants hug the water’s edge and a couple of casinos can be found on the beach road.

Above Victory Beach, Victory Hill offers a variety of guesthouses, restaurants and bars. Several places, both budget and mid-range dot the side of the Hill overlooking the ocean, some offering excellent sunset views.

The very top of hill is one of Sihanoukville’s nightlife hotspots. The hilltop road is lined with hostess bars, music and sport bars as well as a few restaurants. After dark the street come to life, some places staying open into the early morning.

Hawaii Beach at the far southern end of the Victory Beaches is fairly busy these days, and is much more popular with Cambodian beach-goers than foreign tourists. Like the other major beaches, Hawaii is lined with umbrellas and chairs and little beach shack bars and restaurants.

Sokha Beach

Occupying all of Sokha Beach, the Sokha Beach Resort offers luxury accommodation and fine dining. Sokha Beach is a beautiful beach, a crescent of sand about one kilometer long and comparatively wide. The fine pearl white sand is perfectly groomed these days but the beach is fairly quiet, frequented primarily by resort guests. There aren’t any little seafood shacks, but dining gazebos and an up-market beach bar / restaurant run by the Sokha Beach Resort.

Other Beaches

These ‘other’ beaches are outside of the town area and are frequented more by fishermen than tourists, though this is slowly changing. Road conditions can be challenging, especially in the wet season.

Ream Beach
A distant beach, 27 kilometers north of town, Ream Beach is long and narrow, sitting at the edge of Preah Sihanouk (‘Ream’) National Park. The beach is largely untouristed and of very average quality. Long but very narrow with a mix of fine and coarse light tan sand.

The road toward Naval Base offers a nice little oceanside drive and sections are lined with water’s edge seafood shacks and a thin beach - the kind of places with hammocks as well as chairs and tables, and serving seafood BBQ, steamed and fried fish, seafood soups, fried rice, sates and the like.

From Sihanoukville take National Route #4 18km north to the Airport turnoff road at Ream. Turn right onto the Airport Road, and go straight on 9km to the ocean, passing along the edge of Ream National Park. At the ocean, the road to the right traces Ream Beach, which is largely deserted. The road to the left follows more narrow beach and rocky ocean's edge to the Naval Base.

Prek Treng Beach
Another distant beach, Prek Treng is a long, wide crescent of brilliant white sand a few kilometers north of town, offering comparatively warm shallow waters. The beach is in good shape, groomed and landscaped, but is usually all but deserted. Picnickers do show up on the weekends and sometimes during the week, but there are rarely more than a few groups there. Sometimes a couple of food shacks stand open at the near end. To get there follow Hun Sen Beach Drive north a few kilometers past the port area. Best to bring along some of your own drinks and snacks.

blue and white water waves

Day trips to nearby islands and party cruises, snorkeling and scuba diving are probably the most popular other-than-the-beach activities around Sihanoukville these days but there are lots of other local fun and adventure possibilities as well - ocean fishing, nature walks and river trips in Ream and Kirirom National Parks, kayaking, water skiing, jet skies, multi-day trips exploring the islands, countryside tours to little fishing villages and secluded beaches, an afternoon at the waterfall, overnighters to Bokor Hill Station, Kep, Kampot and more. Listed below are details on just a few of the possible activities. Ask the listed tour operators for more destinations and activities. Also see Kampot and Kep Points of Interest.

Boats & Water Sports

Island hopping, fishing, booze cruises...
Island hopping day cruises and evening booze cruises are the most popular off-beach activities in Sihanoukville. Several kinds of package boat trips are available, the most popular being the full-day island cruise - leaving in the morning and taking in three islands for snorkeling, swimming, fishing, kayaking, seafood lunch and drink, starting around starting around $15-$25.

Sihanoukville: Boating, Excursions, Cruises

If you are interested in exploring one of the bigger islands of Koh Rong or Koh Rong Sanloem, there are several daily express ferries as well as standard slow boats from Sihanoukville. It’s easy to check out Koh Toch Beach on Koh Rong, or Saracen Bay and M’pay Bay on Koh Rong Sanloem in a day - ferry there in the morning then back in the afternoon, or stay if you like. The return tickets are open ended. For regularly scheduled ferry transport to the islands see here.

Be travel smart, make sure your boat has sufficient safety equipment and is not overloaded.
For the fishermen...

There are plenty of angling opportunities in the waters around the local islands. The best fishing is in the dry season (Nov-May) when the weather is fair. A variety of game species inhabit the local waters including the prized barracuda.
Boats...

Be smart, make sure your boat has sufficient safety equipment and is not overloaded.

Ream National Park

Ream National Park, officially called Preah Sihanouk National Park, the park has become known as “Ream” because it is located in the Ream commune. The park was established in 1993, inaugurated in March 1995, and encompasses 21,000 hectares of coastal area including sandy beaches, mangrove forests, the Prek Tuk Sap estuary, off-shore coral reefs and two islands (Koh Thmei and Koh Seh). Though rarely seen the Park provides refuge for such species as macaques, sun bear, dolphins, mouse deer, pangolin, over a hundred species of birds and there is even rumored to be a tiger. The Park and tour operator out of Sihanoukville offer a number of different tours of the park including jungle trekking and river boat trips along the Prek Tuk River through the jungle and mangroves to the ocean. The river trip is the most popular tour of the Park and is also more likely to provide wildlife sightings. Most tours are less than a half-day. Tours may be arranged through a tour operator (see page 36) or directly through the Park at the Park Office (located 23 km north of Sihanouk Ville, 500m off Route 4 on Airport Road, opposite the entrance to the airport). The Park office is open 7 days per week 7AM to 5PM and there are usually several guides of varying linguistic skill levels on hand.

Park Office phone: 012-875096, 012-215759. Several guesthouses in Sihanoukville as well as tour operators can arrange transportation and tours of the park.

There are set programs offered by the Park though itineraries are flexible and can be tailored to individual or group needs. Prices may vary.

Bokor Hill Station (Phnom Bokor)

Tours out of Kampot to the old Bokor Hill Station in the nearby Elephant Mountains have long been popular. A new casino/hotel complex has gone up over the last couple of years, and the road up the mountain greatly improved, but the remnants of the old hill station are still there - a mountaintop collection of crumbling buildings - hotel, casino, church and royal residence.

The Bokor complex was originally constructed by French authorities in the early 1920s as a complement to the Kep resort area. In its day Bokor was an elegant getaway for officials and foreign visitors - a classic colonial 'hill station' located in the mountains to allow foreigner visitors accustomed to more temperate climes to escape the tropical heat. The old building were abandoned to war in the 1970s, leaving ghostly ruins - vestiges of a different age, often shrouded in fog and clouds.

One thing that the years have not changed is the absolutely spectacular view of the coast and the cool (sometimes cold) mountain air. Bokor is jungled and excursions beyond Bokor, including trekking, can be arranged by local tour operators.

Full day Bokor tours can be arranged through a local tour operator. Tours start at about $10/person inclusive for an all-day tour. Some tour operators offer variations on the usual tour to include such things as trekking, cycling, motorcycling, a boat cruise. The Park Office and turn-off to the Hill Station are 37km west of Kampot on National Route 3. The drive from the base to the top takes 30-45 minutes. See Kampot page for more.

Sihanoukville Tour Operators: Boats, Islands, Equipment Rental...

In addition to the tour operators and dive shops, most of the hotels and guesthouses in Sihanoukville and even several of the restaurants and bars (especially the beach bars) arrange boat trips and island picnics, trips to the waterfalls, the national parks and Bokor Hill Station. Bear in mind that different operators offer different levels of expertise, types of boats, quality of equipment and service, etc. Shop around for the tour operator that best fits your requirements.

See Sihanoukville Travel and Tour Operations for a complete list.

The waters off of Sihanoukville and the nearby islands offer some good scuba diving opportunities.

Coral encrusted rocky reefs surround many of the local islands, supporting abundant hard and soft corals, sponges, anemones and an assortment of fish life including sting rays, moray eels, dolphins and even whales. Experienced divers report that the variety and concentration of marine life along the reefs is impressive.

Good dive sites can be found within a two hour boat trip of town, making for an easy day trip, but the very best sites are 4-6 hours out.

The local waters are warm (consistently between 27-31C) and though visibility can be quite variable, especially during the monsoon season. In the diving season from October to June visibility ranges from 10-25 meters on good days, even at nearby islands such as Koh Rong Samloem - better at more distant sites such as Koh Tang. Most of the dive sites are comparatively shallow (around 15 meters) and gentle currents around the islands allow drift diving over the reefs and outcroppings.

Some of the more popular diving islands include.

Koh Rong Many good snorkeling areas and near two dozen good dive sites around the island. Depths of 5-15 meters. (Map)

Koh Rong Samloem Rocky reefs host a variety of marine life in shallow waters and at depths up to 18 meters. Like all of the nearby islands the best diving and visibility is on the west side. Species sightings include cobia, puffer fish, moray eels, octopus, rays, crabs, nudibranch, cuttlefish, scorpion fish, lion fish, barracuda, yellow goatfish, parrotfish and more. (Map)

Koh Kon (‘Baby Island’) is, as the name implies, a small island sitting just off the north tip of Koh Rong Samloem. Rocky, coral encrusted outcrops on the west and south sides of the island provide home to a variety of corals and marine life including anemones, box fish, parrot fish, yellow goat fish, snappers, stingrays, moray eels and cat sharks. Visibility is moderate, averaging around 10 meters, though better on some days. (Map)

Koh Tang, Koh Prins, Poulou Wai Some of the best diving in the area lay 4-8 hours southwest, around Koh Tang, Koh Prins and Poulo Wai. The area has rocky reefs, depths of 15-40m and much better visibility than reefs closer to shore, ranging from 10-30m, usually around 15m. Koh Prins has two shipwrecks to the northwest at 30-40m. Koh Tang is a favorite diver’s destination. The island played a major role in the 'Mayaguez Incident' and still shows the scarring of the May 1975 battle between American and Khmer Rouge forces. The surrounding waters offer several reefs and outcroppings displaying a particularly colorful variety of hard and soft corals, an abundance of other marine life, and consistently good visibility.

Money and Banks

Though Cambodian riel (R) is the official currency, US dollars are used as commonly as riel. Most tourist oriented businesses set their prices in US dollars. Though the exchange rate varies over time, it has hovered near 4000R to the dollar for several years and many small businesses treat 4000R as the de facto rate regardless of today’s exact exchange rate. When accepting US dollars, inspect the bills carefully. Marred riel is acceptable tender, but the tiniest tear in a large US note renders it worthless in Cambodia...

ATMs

Sihanoukville has several ATMs with international access including: downtown at ANZ Royal Bank; a couple near the Golden Lions; at the Golden Sand Hotel on Ochheuteal Beach; at the Holiday Palace Hotel on Victory Beach; at the Total Station downtown and at the convenience store opposite Mealy Chenda Guesthouse on Victory Hill.

Credit Cards

Visa and MasterCard (MC) are the most widely accepted. Some places also take AMEX, ANZ Bluespot, the ACLEDA GoldDot card (GD) and Union Pay (UP). Some businesses charge a 2%-4% fee on credit card payment.

Travelers checks are still accepted at some banks and hotels, but there are fewer places all the time. Ana Travel offers currency/travelers cheque exchange and Visa and MasterCard advances.

Safety & Security Tips

* Do not leave your things unattended on the beach while you go swimming or into your bungalow, even briefly.

* Beware of illegal drugs. Enforcement and penalties, even for simple possession, have been stepped up considerably.

* Be alert for snatch & grab thieves, usually on motorcycles. Stow your bag securely in tuk-tuks and carry your bag/camera away from the street side.

* Traffic laws, including helmet and driver license laws are being more strictly enforced. Mind the law.

* Boat safety practices are not up to international standards. It is up to YOU to make sure your boat has sufficient safety equipment and is not overloaded.
